Responding to a debt collection notice without making it worse

Draft guide to receiving a debt collection notice, checking the debt is yours, and responding without admitting more than you should.

First check the basics

  • Is the debt yours, in the right amount, and within the limitation period
  • Was the original creditor allowed to sell or assign the debt
  • Has the collector identified themselves, the debt, and the original creditor in writing

Document every contact

Save voicemails, take screenshots, and write down the date, time, and what was said. This makes it easier to push back if contact becomes unreasonable.

Take action

Fairgo can draft a verification request and a follow-up if the collector keeps contacting you. [Draft a verification request](/resolve/voice?category=debt-collection) or [get free help](/help) before agreeing to a payment plan.
