Keep a contact log
Record the date, time, phone number or sender, person or company name, what they said the debt was for, and whether they gave you a reference number. Save messages and letters rather than relying on memory.
Ask for the basics
You can ask for details of the debt, the creditor, the amount claimed, and where payments would go. If the debt is not clear, do not guess. Ask for written information and get advice if you are unsure.
Get help early
Debt collection can feel urgent even when you have rights and options. A financial counsellor can help you prioritise essential costs, hardship requests, and complaint pathways.
